MESENTERIC LYMPHADENITIS

Mesenteric Lymphadenitis – Causes, Symptoms & Treatment

Mesenteric lymphadenitis means swelling of the lymph nodes in the abdomen, usually due to infection or inflammation.
It often mimics appendicitis, causing lower abdominal pain — especially in children and young adults.

What Is Mesenteric Lymphadenitis?

Lymph nodes in the mesentery (thin tissue that holds intestines) become enlarged due to:

  • Infection
  • Viral illness
  • Inflammation of intestines
  • Rarely due to more serious diseases

It is mostly self-limiting, but proper evaluation is important to rule out other problems.

🔍 Common Causes

1. Viral Infection (Most Common)

  • Adenovirus
  • Rotavirus
  • Flu-like viral infection

2. Bacterial Infection

  • Yersinia
  • Salmonella
  • Tuberculosis (rarely)

3. Gastroenteritis

4. Inflammatory Disorders

  • Crohn’s disease
  • Ulcerative colitis

5. Other Rare Causes

  • Lymphoma
  • Immune disorders

⚠️ Symptoms

Patients may experience:

  • Pain around or below the belly button
  • Fever
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Loss of appetite
  • Tenderness in lower abdomen
  • Symptoms similar to appendicitis

🩺 Diagnosis

To confirm the condition and rule out appendicitis:

  • Ultrasound abdomen (most important)
  • CBC (Blood count)
  • CRP/ESR
  • Urine test
  • Stool test (if infection suspected)
  • CT Scan (in adults if needed)

🧪 Treatment

Most cases improve with supportive care:

Rest & Hydration

To recover faster.

Pain Relief Medicines

As prescribed by the doctor.

Antibiotics

Only if bacterial infection is confirmed.

Treating the Underlying Infection

Viral infections usually settle on their own.

Follow-up Ultrasound

If symptoms persist.

🥗 Diet During Recovery

  • Light food: khichdi, dal-rice, soups
  • Plenty of water & ORS
  • Avoid oily, spicy food
  • Avoid milk temporarily if nauseous
  • Include curd and bananas

⚠️ When to Seek Urgent Help

  • Severe abdominal pain
  • High fever
  • Persistent vomiting
  • Inability to eat or drink
  • Bloody stools
  • Pain moving to the right side (rule out appendicitis)
