LYMPH NODE SWELLING

Lymph Node Swelling – Causes, Symptoms & Advanced Treatment in Thane

By Dr. Ankur Bhanushali | General, Laparoscopic & Minimal Access Surgeon

Swollen lymph nodes (also called lymphadenopathy) are one of the most common reasons patients seek medical attention. While many cases are harmless and due to simple infections, some may indicate deeper issues that require careful evaluation and timely treatment.

Lymph nodes help your body fight infections, but when they swell, it means your immune system is reacting. Understanding the cause early helps ensure effective treatment and prevents complications.

Dr. Ankur Bhanushali offers expert diagnosis and management of lymph node swelling, including infections, cysts, tumours, abscesses, and unexplained lumps. With experience in minimally invasive lymph node biopsy and excision, patients receive safe, precise and comfortable surgical care.

To ensure smooth evaluation and treatment, consultations and surgeries are available at two centres in Thane West:
Aayush Multispeciality Hospital – Panch Pakhdi
Dr. Ankur Surgical Clinic – Charai

Both locations offer modern technology, accurate investigations, and personalised care for every patient.

What Are Lymph Nodes?

Lymph nodes are small, bean-shaped glands present throughout the body, including the neck, underarms, groin, chest, and abdomen.
They filter harmful substances and help in immunity.

When lymph nodes swell, it may feel like a lump, either painful or painless.

Common Causes of Lymph Node Swelling

1. Infections

The most common cause.

  • Viral infection
  • Bacterial infection
  • Throat infection
  • Ear infection
  • Skin infection
  • Dental infection

2. Immune Reactions

Body’s immune system responding to inflammation.

3. Lymph Node Abscess

When pus collects inside a lymph node — requires drainage.

4. Tuberculosis (TB Lymphadenitis)

Common in India; needs early diagnosis & treatment.

5. Cancerous Causes (Rare but Serious)

  • Lymphoma
  • Leukemia
  • Metastatic cancer

Early evaluation helps rule out serious causes.

Symptoms of Swollen Lymph Nodes

  • Lump in neck, underarms, groin, or jawline
  • Pain or tenderness
  • Fever
  • Sore throat
  • Night sweats
  • Weight loss
  • Fatigue
  • Warmth or redness if infected
  • Lump increasing in size

If a lymph node stays enlarged for more than 2–3 weeks, medical evaluation is important.

Diagnosis of Lymph Node Swelling

✔ Physical Examination

To check consistency, mobility, tenderness.

✔ Blood Tests

To rule out infection or inflammation.

✔ Ultrasound

To differentiate between solid vs cystic swelling.

✔ FNAC (Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology)

Simple needle test to check the nature of swelling.

✔ Biopsy / Excision

If required, the lymph node can be surgically removed for accurate diagnosis.

✔ TB Tests (if suspected)

Includes PCR, culture, or Mantoux test.

Treatment Options

1. Medication

  • Antibiotics for infection
  • Anti-inflammatory medicines
  • Pain relief
  • TB treatment (if diagnosed)

2. Abscess Drainage

If pus is present, surgical drainage provides immediate relief.

3. Lymph Node Excision Surgery

Dr. Ankur performs minimally invasive removal using small cosmetic incisions.

4. Treatment of Underlying Cause

Based on findings: infection, TB, immune disorder, or rare tumour.

Recovery After Treatment

  • Pain relief within 24–48 hours
  • Dressing for a few days if surgery done
  • Follow-up required for biopsy results
  • Resume routine activities quickly
  • Scar kept minimal with cosmetic technique

When to See a Doctor Immediately
