Appendicectomy

Appendicectomy

The appendix is a small, tube-shaped vestigial organ attached to the cecum, which is the first part of the large intestine. Although it was once believed to have a digestive function, the appendix is now considered to have no significant function in the human body. Despite this, the appendix can still cause medical issues, particularly appendicitis.  Appendicitis is the inflammation and infection of the appendix.

It is the most common cause of pain in the right lower abdomen. To confirm a diagnosis of appendicitis, medical imaging is required. The primary method of diagnosis is an ultrasound of the abdomen, which can help visualize the inflamed appendix. In some cases, a CT scan may be necessary for a more accurate diagnosis, especially if the ultrasound results are inconclusive or if the patient’s symptoms are atypical.

While the appendix no longer serves a critical function, its inflammation can lead to serious medical conditions requiring prompt diagnosis and treatment. Appendicitis is a common and urgent medical condition that is primarily treated through surgical removal of the appendix, with antibiotics serving as an alternative treatment in select cases. Early intervention is key to preventing complications and ensuring a swift recovery.
