Hydrocele – Causes, Symptoms & Laser / Surgical Treatment
Advanced Hydrocele Surgery in Thane – By Dr. Ankur Bhanushali
What Is a Hydrocele?
A hydrocele is a painless swelling in the scrotum caused by fluid accumulation around the testicle.
It may:
✔ Develop slowly
✔ Increase gradually in size
✔ Cause heaviness or discomfort
Hydrocele is common in adult males and elderly men.
Why Does Hydrocele Occur?
Hydrocele develops when fluid builds up in the protective sac (tunica vaginalis) around the testis.
Common causes include:
✔ Previous infection
✔ Injury to scrotum
✔ Inflammation
✔ Post-surgical changes
✔ Idiopathic (no clear cause)
In newborns, hydrocele may be congenital.
Symptoms of Hydrocele
✔ Painless scrotal swelling
✔ Heaviness in scrotum
✔ Discomfort while walking
✔ Difficulty sitting comfortably
✔ Cosmetic concern
Pain is usually absent unless infection occurs.
Is Hydrocele Dangerous?
Hydrocele itself is not cancer.
However, evaluation is important to rule out:
✔ Hernia
✔ Testicular tumor
✔ Infection
Any scrotal swelling should be examined by a surgeon.
How Is Hydrocele Diagnosed?
✔ Clinical examination
✔ Transillumination test (light test)
✔ Ultrasound scrotum
Ultrasound confirms fluid collection and rules out other conditions.
Does Hydrocele Go Away With Medicine?
In adults — NO.
Medicines do not permanently cure hydrocele.
Temporary needle aspiration may reduce swelling but:
❌ Fluid usually comes back
❌ Risk of infection increases
Definitive treatment is surgical.
When Is Surgery Required?
✔ Large swelling
✔ Increasing size
✔ Discomfort
✔ Cosmetic concern
✔ Associated infection
Surgery is safe and commonly performed.
Hydrocele Surgery (Hydrocelectomy)
Modern hydrocele treatment involves:
✔ Small incision
✔ Removal of fluid
✔ Sac excision or repair
✔ Minimal stitches
Procedure is usually:
✔ 30–45 minutes
✔ Done under spinal or short anesthesia
✔ Daycare or 1-day admission
Recovery After Surgery
✔ Mild swelling for few days
✔ Supportive underwear advised
✔ Avoid heavy lifting for 2–3 weeks
✔ Return to normal activity in 7–10 days
Complete recovery is smooth in most patients.
Complications (Rare)
✔ Infection
✔ Hematoma
✔ Recurrence (very rare with proper technique)
Choosing an experienced surgeon reduces risks.
Important: Hydrocele vs Hernia
Hydrocele:
✔ Fluid swelling
✔ Usually painless
Hernia:
✔ Intestine bulges into scrotum
✔ May cause pain
✔ Requires urgent repair
Correct diagnosis is essential.
